At Westfield we pride ourselves on the fact that we lead the way with new and exciting ideas, often finding other settings soon follow our example. Our outdoor area is no exception and we have, for many years, tried to show the children that the outdoors is for having fun in, growing and taking care of things. We were doing this long before it was decided by Government that this was the kind of environment children should learn in! We encourage the children to try the food they grow and take them out of the nursery environment to show them where their food comes from. We have had farm and shop visits to help do this.
The children have good experiences outdoors, in all kinds of weather, using all kinds of equipment. They can build dens, sit in the shade of the apple tree, water the plants or read a book in the summer house. Over the years we have always had a variety of pets to add to the enjoyment and we are hoping that our new, though very long awaited for, ducks will carry on this tradition.
